Prof. Andréa Simone Stucchi de Camargo Delivers Expert Lectures on Spectroscopy
From June 3 to June 13, we welcomed Prof. Andréa Simone Stucchi de Camargo at the FunGlass Centre. Prof. de Camargo is a professor at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Head of Division 5.6 – Glass at the Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, Germany.
She delivered a series of lectures on spectroscopy, covering several topics:
- General introduction to spectroscopy, with a focus on glass and glass-ceramics.
- Spectroscopy – application to glasses.
- Vibrational spectroscopy, including theoretical descriptions of transition probabilities, combination bands and overtones, attenuated total reflectance (ATR), and experimental aspects focused on the analysis of the spectra of glass and glass-ceramics.
Andrea also gave special guest lectures as part of the FunGlass school program in Oponice. These lectures included “From Glass Scintillators to Luminescent Host-Guest Hybrid Materials: Optimizing Design and Synthesis,” and a lecture on Women in Science – Let’s Teach Our Girls to Be Brave!

Prof. Andrea de Camargo holds a BSc (1996) and MSc in Chemistry with emphasis on Inorganic Chemistry (1999) from the State University of São Paulo Júlio de Mesquita Filho, and a PhD in Sciences: Applied Physics (2003) from the University of São Paulo. In 2006 she became an Assistant Professor and since 2015 is an Associate Professor of the São Carlos Institute of Physics IFSC/USP.
Her research experience is in the areas of Materials Science and Physics: Optical and Spectroscopic Properties in Condensed Matter. Particularly, she is interested in the development and structural/functional characterization of optical and luminescent materials, as glasses and glass ceramics doped with rare earth ions, and host-guest hybrid systems based on meso- and microporous matrices loaded with highly luminescent species such as organometallic complexes, dyes and quantum dots. The targeted materials find applications in a variety of fields from infrared lasing, solar concentrators and lighting, to photodynamic therapy. At IFSC/USP, she leads LEMAF – Laboratory of Spectroscopy of Functional Materials and employs various optical and solid-state magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques to seek for structural-functional correlations that lead to optimized materials. Prof. De Camargo is an ad hoc reviewer of CNPq, FAPESP, FUNDECT, CAPES and Fundação Serrapilheira, reviewer of several peer reviewed journals and, since 2020, an Editor of J. Materials Science. In 2007 she was granted the L´ORÉAL Prize for Women in Science Brazil and nominated Affiliated Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2008-2013). Between 2016-2018, she acted as a member of the Gender Study Group of the Brazilian Physics Society. In 2020 she also became Scientific Director of the Brazilian Materials Research Society (SBPMat) and Brazilian Ambassador Scientist of the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers which have received more than 1500 citations, and advised several Masters, PhD and postdoctoral fellows.
