This paper presents results of the collaboration of researchers at Centre for Functional and Surface Functionalized Glass (FunGlass), Alexander Dubček University of Trencin, Slovakia, with the research group of Professor Aldo R. Boccaccini, Institute of Biomaterials, (LINK: https://www.biomat.tf.fau.eu/ ) University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In this study, bioactive glasses of 45S5 composition doped with B and Co, as angiogenic ions, were developed and characterized. The synergy of the angiogenic action of the B and Co ions was demonstrated for the first time in this study by measuring the release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from mouse bone marrow-derived stromal cell line (ST2), exposed to different concentrations of dissolution products of the bioactive glasses.
