Dr. Si Chen and Dr. Martin Michálek as guest editors of special issue of Materials journal
That´s pleasure to announce that our researchers Dr. Si Chen and Dr. Martin Michálek from the Department of Biomaterials are appointed guest editors of a special issue „Preparation, Characteristics and Application of Bioactive Glass to Bone Regeneration“ within the Materials, Open Access Journal (ISSN 1996-1944). This special issue belongs to the section “Advanced and Functional Ceramics and Glass“
Bioactive glasses (BGs) were initially developed by Larry Hench et al. in the late 1960s. BGs are able to produce hydroxyapatite in contact with physiological fluids and form strong bonds with bone and soft tissue. Meanwhile, the Si, P, and Ca ions released by the degradation of BGs can promote osteogenesis and angiogenesis. These properties of BGs make them one of the most promising materials for bone repair.
