FunGlass participated at ESG15 Conference in Cambridge, UK

The Society of Glass Technology held two conferences alongside its Annual Conference in Cambridge, UK, from July 15-19, 2024. These conferences were the 15th European Society of Glass Science and Technology Conference (ESG15) and the 15th International Conference on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials (NCM15).

The ESG conference was first held in 1991 in Sheffield and is organized every two years. It is a platform where glass scientists, technologists, and engineers from Europe and beyond come together to report on and discuss progress in the field.

FunGlass had two representatives at the ESG conference: Prof. Dušan Galusek and Dr. Dagmar Galusková. Dagmar gave a lecture titled “Monitoring the Chemical Homogeneity of Silica Glass with Laser Ablation Mass Spectrometry,” results of research in cooperation with Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech republic.

Prof. Galusek delivered an invited lecture titled “Recycled Glass as a Raw Material for Advanced Building Materials and Water Treatment Applications.” This presentation summarized the joint activities of the FunGlass Center and the Department of Materials Engineering, University of Padova, Italy. It focused on the use of waste glass (which can no longer be recycled) for various applications, including building materials and water treatment. These processes involve ecological, low-temperature methods inspired by geopolymer technology, facilitating the conversion of waste glass into desired products through alkaline activation and subsequent curing at a temperature close to room temperature.

Prof. Galusek also chaired the ESG15 section on Advanced Glassy Materials.
