ICG Summer School 2024: Exploring Advances in Glass Science and Technology

From July 7-12, the ICG Summer School was held in Montpellier. This workshop provided an overview of the fundamentals in glass science, emphasizing preparation, structure-property relationships, experimental techniques, MD simulations, and tools that probe structure. Specific themes included thermodynamics, kinetics, optical behavior, transport phenomena, nucleation, crystallization, and strength. The lecturers were world experts in their fields. A new topic this year was Sol-Gel glass-making.

A feature of these workshops is student-centered learning. Thus, 16 formal lectures were supplemented by 8 tutorials involving discussions with participants. The representative for FunGlass was PhD student Shubham Gupta with his project “Zero Thermal Quenching Phosphor for NUV Converted W-LEDs.“

This is how he summarized his participation at the ICG Summer School:

“The experience was incredibly enriching, and I learned a great deal from a series of lectures on various topics including Sol-Gel processes, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and the application of AI technology in glass research. I had the honor of meeting top leaders from both the glass industry and academia. Additionally, I participated in a project addressing problems arising from waste glass and received invaluable advice from industry leaders. I believe these experiences and insights could be of great interest to our FunGlass community.“
